Remembering Sophia Virgo: A Champion of Jamaican Table Tennis

The Jamaican table tennis community is mourning the passing of Sophia Virgo, a former national and Caribbean champion remembered across the sport as a fierce competitor with a fearsome forehand.

Tributes poured in from team-mates and contemporaries, including Sandra Riettie, with whom Virgo represented Jamaica at the 1986 Caribbean Championships in Ponce, Puerto Rico. “She was a great champion,” one long-time colleague wrote. “It is indeed a sad day for table tennis in particular.”

Part of a proud lineage

Virgo’s passing is a moment to celebrate the depth of Jamaica’s table tennis heritage. It is a story that stretches back to Joy Foster, who in 1958, aged just eight, became the youngest athlete ever to represent her country internationally — a Guinness World Record — and went on to become Jamaica’s first Sportswoman of the Year. Champions such as Randy Fagan and Virgo herself carried that legacy forward through the decades.

Smash JA extends its condolences to Sophia Virgo’s family, friends and the wider table tennis fraternity. Walk good, champion.
